# Pocket Chronicle — fact sheet

## One line

Pocket Chronicle is a private, prompted archive of a child's childhood for iPhone: two prompts a
day — a question, and a small mission to photograph, film, record or do — each answer filed with the
prompt that caused it and the child's exact age, on a timeline they inherit.

## Why it exists

Travis Terry built it for himself. He forgets to take pictures, and on the days he remembers, a year
later he cannot say what was happening or why he took the shot. The camera roll remembers what his
kid looked like and nothing about what they were like.

So the app gives him a reason to write one thing down and a reason to take the picture, and keeps
the reason attached to it afterwards.

## What it does

**Two prompts a day.** One is always a question. The other is a mission — a photo, a video, their
voice, or something to do together. Weekends carry a second mission. Members also get a bigger
mission each week, a monthly measurement, and letters sealed until an age you choose. There are 133
prompts, all published on the website before anyone signs up.

**Four ways to answer, one tap from the card.** A photo or a video, a voice recording, a written
sentence, or "did it" — which is a complete entry with nothing to upload. The prompt decides which
one opens: a question opens a text field, a voice mission opens the recorder.

**Voice, transcribed on the phone.** Recordings run up to ten minutes. On an iPhone running iOS 26
the phone writes the transcript itself, so what a child said out loud becomes searchable text, and
the audio never goes to a transcription service.

**Every entry carries an exact age.** Computed from when it happened, not when it was uploaded.

**You can fill in the past.** Any entry backdates to any day, years ago, and lands at the age the
child was then. "Look back" walks the camera roll month by month to find months never written
about, reading only dates and counts, on the phone.

**Search across everything**, including what was said out loud — titles, notes, captions and
transcripts.

**Moments** resurfaces this day in earlier years.

**Sealed letters.** Write to the child now; it opens at the age you choose. In an export they are
included in the clear, because an export you cannot read is not a backup.

**Export, one tap, free on every tier.** A zip with every entry, photograph and recording in folders
by date, plus a viewer that opens offline from a double-click. JPEG, MP4, M4A, plain text and HTML.

**One notification a day at most**, at a time you pick, off whenever you want.

**One membership per household.** Every child, both parents.

Also: a Lock Screen and Home Screen widget, a share extension for filing a photo without opening the
app, and sign-in with Apple, Google, or a link sent to an email address added in Settings.

## Privacy and the business model

- **No ads on any tier, including the free one.** Nothing about a child is sold or used to train
  anything.
- **No third-party code in the app.** No analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, no tracker in the binary.
- **Private by default.** No feed, no likes, no discovery, no follower count.
- **Nothing you write is ever locked behind payment.** Stop paying and the whole archive stays
  readable, searchable and exportable.
- **Deletion is real.** Account deletion waits seven days, then destroys the data. Signing back in
  cancels it.

## Design rules the product is built under

No streaks, no badges, no guilt copy, no countdowns, no red urgency states. A missed day is not a
failure and the app never says it was. Prompts never assume a child's gender — the app supports
he/him, she/her and they/them, and the prompt library is written with pronoun tokens.

## Six details that are easy to get slightly wrong

1. **Two prompts a day, not one.** The App Store subtitle's "one prompt a day" is shorthand for the
   free daily question.
2. **The daily question is answered by typing.** Voice answers a voice mission or a freeform entry.
3. **Transcription needs iOS 26**; the app runs on 18.6 and later. On an older iPhone the recording
   is kept and only the transcript is missing.
4. **Private, not local-only.** Entries sync to Pocket Chronicle's server, which is what lets a
   second parent and a new phone work. Please don't call it "local-first".
5. **The recorder holds ten minutes**, not two.
6. **After the first 14 days, free means the daily question.** Anything needing storage is
   membership; everything already captured stays yours on any tier.

## About the archive in the screenshots

Every screenshot and every second of the video shows a real build. The child — Wren — is invented
and every entry was written for this kit. No real family's data appears anywhere.
